The Book of Acts: The Rest of the Story That Will Inspire You
The Book of Acts: The Rest of the Story That Will Inspire You
“In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.”
Dear Friends,
Stories are meant to be told – and I have always been a storyteller. That’s one of the reasons I challenged myself to study through the gospel of Matthew and write down my reflections along the way. I had no idea it would take me almost three years to finish. But now that the journey is complete, I don’t want to stop. I feel compelled to continue.
Why the Book of Acts Is the Rest of the Story
Years ago, a well-known radio commentator named Paul Harvey captured audiences with his unique storytelling. He would share a true story, carefully weaving in fascinating and unexpected details, but he would withhold an important detail such as the subject’s name until the very end. We listeners sat on the edge of our seats, waiting for the big reveal. Then Harvey would close with his famous line: “And now you know…the rest of the story.”
I thought of Paul Harvey’s style when I read the opening verses of the book of Acts. Acts was written by Luke, another gospel writer, as a continuation of his first letter, the Gospel of Luke, addressed to his friend Theophilus.
At the beginning of his gospel, Luke explained that he had carefully investigated everything from the very beginning, drawing from eyewitness accounts and testimonies of those who first followed Christ. He assured Theophilus that his record was orderly, accurate, and trustworthy so that his friend could have confidence in what he had been taught.
Luke’s Purpose in Writing the Book of Acts
But after completing his gospel, Luke couldn’t stop. He had more to share. And so he wrote a second volume – what we now know as the book of Acts – to tell the rest of the story: what happened after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven.
Through Luke God preserved both accounts so that you and I can read these eyewitness testimonies today. And what we find in Acts is not only true, it is also astonishing. That’s why I’ve decided to continue my personal challenge by studying through this amazing book and sharing my reflections with you.
How the Book of Acts Speaks to Us Today
The events recorded in Acts are not just history. They carry meaning for us as God’s people today. Just as the first believers were empowered by the Holy Spirit, so we too have His presence living in us. And He is still at work in our world, powerfully moving, even in the face of unbelief and persecution.
Walking Together Through the Book of Acts
I invite you to join me on this journey through Acts. My prayer is that, as you read, God will capture your heart and open your eyes to the beauty of, just as Paul Harvey might say, the rest of the story.
Love,
Mama
