El Día de Muertos and the Powerful Truth: Jesus Conquered Death
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” (NIV)
Dear Friends,
Death is a topic many prefer to avoid. We tuck it away in the back of our minds, only pulling it out when tragedy strikes or we attend a funeral. In contrast, some cultures face the subject more directly, some even celebrate it. Yet, in the midst of colorful festivities, the understanding of death and what comes after often remains cloudy and mysterious.
As Christians, the Bible gives us a different perspective. We don’t need to fear death or celebrate it mindlessly, because we know that beyond it lies a greater reality – eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Experiencing El Día de Muertos
Last week, I had the opportunity to visit Mexico during a special time of year. On November 1st and 2nd Mexicans celebrate El Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead. It’s a lively and deeply meaningful holiday where people remember loved ones who have died. Homes and cities are decorated with pumpkins, flowers, and skeletons dressed in elegant clothing to represent those who have passed. Shrines, or ofrendas, display photos, candles, and cherished memorabilia of the deceased.
While I personally found the celebrations and decorations unsettling – I’ve never been fond of skeletons – the people of Mexico truly enjoy this holiday. They fill the streets with music, dancing, and parades in a joyful remembrance of those who’ve gone before them.
A Different Kind of Celebration
These ofrendas often include not only photos but also food and drink for the spirits to enjoy. One of the most popular treats is pan de muerto, a lightly sweet bread decorated with bone-shaped dough, found in bakeries and coffee shops everywhere.
All of this and more is done to celebrate something deeply sad – the reality of death.
As a Christian, it’s hard to understand this kind of celebration because our hope and focus are different. Those who believe in Jesus as Savior experience death in a completely different way. We know that Jesus conquered death and that is the source of our joy.
Jesus’ Power Over Death
The Bible speaks honestly about death and the sorrow it brings. In the Gospel of John, we read about a man named Lazarus and the heartbreak his death caused his sisters, Mary and Martha. When Jesus arrived, Martha ran to meet Him, full of grief and confusion. Jesus comforted her with powerful words:
“I am the resurrection and the life.”
He explained that those who believe in Him, though their physical bodies may die, will live again. Then He demonstrated His divine power by raising Lazarus from the dead.
Lazarus had been buried four days, long enough for his body to begin decaying. But when Jesus called his name, the dead man came out of the tomb, still wrapped in grave clothes. He was not a skeleton dressed in fine clothing, but a living, breathing man, alive and restored.
The Ultimate Proof: Jesus Conquered Death
Just days later Jesus gave the greatest demonstration of all. After His own crucifixion – the most painful and humiliating death imaginable – He rose again on the third day. He appeared to many, ate with His followers, and invited them to touch Him, proving He was not merely a spirit, but truly alive in the flesh.
Jesus conquered death once and for all. Because He lives, those who trust in Him will also live forever. Though our earthly bodies will die, our souls go immediately to be with Him. And one day, when Jesus returns, the dead in Christ will rise to meet Him in the air, joined by those still alive to live with Him forever.
A New Day of Life in Christ
This is why we don’t celebrate El Día de Muertos. Our loved ones who died in Christ are not wandering spirits; they are with Him, more alive now than ever before. One glorious day we will see them again.
The real celebration will take place in heaven, where we will see our Savior face to face and be reunited with those we love. In God’s presence, there will be no more sin, pain, sickness, or death – only eternal joy.
El Día de Muertos may remind us of death, but let it also remind you of Jesus’ victory over the grave. Trust Him as your Savior and experience the joy of knowing that, because Jesus conquered death, you can celebrate not the Day of the Dead, but a new Day of Life in Christ.
If you’ve never trusted Jesus as your Savior, don’t wait. He conquered death so that you could live forever. Believe in Him today and experience the peace and hope that only eternal life in Christ can bring.
Love,
Mama
