Hope in Hard Times: Lessons from the Psalms to Lift Your Soul

“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.”

Psalm 43:5

Dear Friends,

When Life Feels Overwhelming

Some days just really stink. Other times, a down season stretches far beyond a single day. It’s safe to say that most of us will experience periods of discouragement and sadness now and then. But even in the midst of life’s challenges, there is hope – hope found in the God who is our stronghold and our ever-present help in times of trouble. Even when our souls feel heavy, we can still lift our hearts in praise. There is hope in hard times.

This verse came to mind recently on a morning when everything seemed to go wrong from the very first sound of the alarm. The cold, snowy weather tempted me to stay in bed, and I had to scramble to make it to an auction checkout on time. I spilled the pot of tea I had brought to keep warm into the bag I was carrying. The printer refused to work. And to top it all off, when I stood to open the payment window for a customer, my office chair rolled out from under me because the trailer wasn’t parked level, and I landed hard on the floor, dazed from the mishap.

These small frustrations only seemed to amplify the inner turmoil I was already carrying. On days and during seasons like this, it’s all too easy to slip into discouragement or even despair.

Facing Your Thoughts Head-On

The writer of Psalms 42 and 43 – often considered a single, continuous meditation – was experiencing his own season of discouragement. Displaced from his homeland and under the oppressive attacks of deceitful and wicked men, he wondered if God had abandoned him.

Tears came easily as this former worship leader recalled the “good old days,” particularly the joy of worshiping in God’s house. His heart longed for those happier times, and even his body seemed to ache with the loss.

Can you relate to his struggle? Your circumstances may not be exactly the same, but perhaps you can empathize with the weight of depression and deep longing that can come during difficult seasons.

If so, it can be helpful to consider how the Psalmist responds to the darkness in his soul. Rather than letting his mind run on autopilot, he intentionally questions and guides it.

He asks himself, “Why are you so downcast, O my soul?” This is a powerful practice. Sometimes simply naming the struggles we face, even journaling them, allows us to confront them directly and evaluate the state of our hearts and minds.

Turning to God for Hope

After acknowledging his hardships, the Psalmist deliberately turns his thoughts toward hope, a hope rooted in the unchanging character of God. Instead of dwelling on his feelings, he focuses on what he knows to be true about the LORD, the God who surrounds him with love, grants him songs in the night, and provides life-giving answers to his prayers.

Consequently, in the midst of his brokenness, the Psalmist pours out his requests. He asks for:

  • Vindication – proof that he is free from blame
  • Rescue – deliverance from his enemies
  • Light and Truth – clarity and clear direction for the future
  • Resolution – the eventual return to God’s holy mountain to worship once again at His altar

The Power of Praise in Dark Seasons

Even if the answers come slowly, the mourner finds comfort by choosing to praise God in the midst of his trials. This intentional act shifts his perspective, directing his attention upward rather than keeping it fixed on his painful circumstances.

I have found that this practice is especially powerful on days, or even months, when life feels overwhelmingly heavy. It is a continual choice: to face our struggles honestly, yet redirect negative thoughts and rise above them. Like flipping on a light switch, praise illuminates every situation, reminding us that God’s faithfulness never fails. He will never leave or forsake us. He is our Savior and our God, the one in whom we can place our hope and trust.

Finding Hope in Hard Times

Some days just stink, and sometimes discouragement stretches on for weeks or even months. When those seasons hit, it helps to remember the lessons the writers of Scripture modeled for us.

Ask your thoughts the hard questions, face them honestly, and then “flip the switch;” let the light of God’s truth shine, replacing negativity with praise.

Feeling downcast today? Lift your eyes and put your hope in God. He is faithful, He is strong, and He will never, ever fail you.

Love,

Mama
