God’s Love Is Better Than Life: Finding the Love That Never Fails

 “Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.”

Psalm 63:3

Dear Friends,

Back in the 1980s, when I was a teen, a popular song was often heard on the radio. Its lyrics resonated with many who were “lookin’ for love in all the wrong places.” Decades later, songs with similar themes still touch listeners’ hearts as people continue searching for a love they can depend on.

In Psalm 63, David celebrates the love he sought, found, and treasured – declaring that God’s love is better than life itself.

A Childhood Memory of Worship

Centuries after David wrote this beautiful psalm, Maranatha Music recorded Thy Loving Kindness, based on Psalm 63:3–4. I first heard the song as an eight-year-old spending a week at a girls’ camp in the Endless Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. Even now, when I hear it sung, I am transported back to a sweet moment in childhood – a time of innocence, yet also a time filled with a deep longing for lasting love. Even children long for a trustworthy love they can depend on.

As my young voice joined the chorus of other campers, I joyfully sang,

“Thy lovingkindness is better than life;
My lips shall praise Thee,
Thus will I bless Thee,
As I lift up my hands unto Thy name.”

A Love Proven Faithful Over Time

Those words touched my heart then, and they touch me even more today. After many decades of life’s joys and sorrows, I can testify that God’s love truly is better than life. He has remained faithful through celebrations and trials, strength and weakness, abundance and need. Like David, I desire to praise Him for as long as I live.

This is a love worth finding, yet many people are still looking in the wrong places. Human love, though meaningful, is imperfect and often disappoints. Countless broken relationships remind us how elusive perfect love can be. That is because perfect love can only be found in the One from whom all other blessings flow.
