How to Protect Yourself from Corruption and Live a Godly Life

“Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God – truly righteous and holy.”

Ephesians 4:22-24

You don’t have to read far in the Bible to understand why the world needs a Savior. After Adam and Eve disobeyed God, sin entered the world, bringing death to all humanity. From that moment, every person has carried a sin nature. Only through Jesus can we be set free. Yet even after receiving God’s gift of salvation, it’s essential to protect yourself from corruption in a world filled with sin.

An Everyday Lesson from Overripe Bananas

I was reminded of how sin often spreads recently through an everyday experience.

We love bananas in our house, and I usually keep a bowl of them on the counter. Occasionally, we don’t eat the bunch fast enough, and the bananas overripen. One day, I noticed a sickly sweet smell before I even saw the blackened fruit.

On top of the new bunch sat an old, partially eaten banana well past its prime. Its decay was beginning to affect the other fruit. The rotting banana released high levels of ethylene gas, causing the rest of the bowl to spoil faster.

A quick assessment told me what I needed to do: separate the fruit and dispose of the overripe pieces to prevent the corruption from spreading.

Sin’s Corruption Through History

The Bible provides similar lessons. The Old Testament is filled with stories showing how sin spreads and destroys lives, revealing why a Savior was necessary.

The book of Judges tells the sad tale of God’s people turning away from Him:

“In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.”

Israel’s Example: When God’s People Turn Away

When Israel followed their natural inclinations rather than God, their blessings disappeared, and life fell apart. This pattern reflects the aftermath of Adam and Eve’s sin: left unchecked, sin spreads and worsens.

God began His plan of salvation by calling Abraham, growing a family that would become a nation. This nation, Israel, was enslaved in Egypt, yet God delivered them with a mighty hand. After rescuing them, He promised them a land flowing with blessings but warned them to remove all evil influences so they wouldn’t worship idols or commit wicked acts.

Sadly, after Joshua’s death, younger generations cohabited with godless people. Like a rotten banana, sin pervaded the nation, and soon they worshiped false gods and committed horrifying acts. The Bible doesn’t sugarcoat sin – it shows the consequences clearly.

How Sin Still Affects the World Today

This principle is still true today. Sin affects everyone and everything. News headlines and daily life reveal its pervasive effects.

While Jesus provides cleansing and forgiveness, we must still protect ourselves from corruption. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 4:22-24 to throw off our old nature and let the Spirit renew our minds:

“Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.”

Practical Steps to Protect Yourself from Corruption

Every day, seek God and allow His Holy Spirit to transform your mind. In His power, we overcome wicked influences, living godly lives unaffected by the world.
