When God Uses Trials for His Purpose: Lessons from Acts 8
When God Uses Trials for His Purpose: Lessons from Acts 8
“On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.”
Dear Friends,
God always accomplishes His will. This is a comforting truth when we remember that He is all-wise, perfectly kind, and all-powerful. Nothing can thwart Him. No matter how difficult our circumstances may be, we can rest assured that He is in control, working out His plan for our good and His glory. God uses trials for His purpose.
When God Uses Trials to Move Us Forward
In Acts 8, we see how God uses trials for His purpose, even through unexpected and painful circumstances, to spread the gospel to the world. Earlier in Acts, Jesus told His disciples that when the Holy Spirit came upon them, they would receive power to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
When the Holy Spirit came, Jerusalem was transformed. Men and women boldly proclaimed the gospel of salvation to everyone they encountered. People from all walks of life believed and received God’s gift. There was joy, unity, and a deep hunger to learn, pray, and worship together.
When Comfort Turns into Calling
But up to this point, the message had remained mostly in Jerusalem and nearby areas. That was about to change.
After the martyrdom of Stephen, a Spirit-filled follower of Christ, a great persecution broke out against the church. This sudden shift disrupted the joyful momentum the believers had been experiencing.
Yet this hardship was not unexpected. Jesus had already warned His disciples:
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated Me first… If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you also.” (John 15:18, 20)
As persecution intensified, believers were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. What looked like chaos was actually God’s plan unfolding. The gospel began to spread, just as Jesus had said.
How God Uses Difficulty to Direct Our Steps
Sometimes, God allows difficulty to “stir the nest,” pushing us out of comfort and into purpose.
I experienced this in my own life.
After Dad and I got married, we settled in a New Jersey town near where I grew up. We attended my childhood church and stayed within familiar circles. For four years, we talked about moving to Dad’s hometown in Ohio so he could join his family’s business.
But every time the subject came up, my heart raced and tears filled my eyes. Everything I loved was in New Jersey. I couldn’t imagine leaving.
Then, over time, some difficult circumstances made the transition easier. What I once resisted, I began to accept. When we finally moved, I was ready, and even excited. Looking back, I have never regretted that decision.
God Uses Trials for His Purpose
In a far more intense way, the early believers were forced from their homes while grieving Stephen’s death and facing hostility. A fierce opponent of the church, Saul, went from house to house, dragging men and women into prison.
But God’s work cannot be stopped.
What was meant for harm became a catalyst for spreading the gospel. Those who fled carried the message with them wherever they went.
This is still true today: God uses trials for His purpose.
We will all face seasons of difficulty, uncertainty, and disruption. But even in those moments, God is at work. When we trust Him, He leads us where He wants us to go, and uses us in ways we never expected.
God Always Accomplishes His Purpose
What are you facing today?
Whether you feel comfortable and settled or sense God stirring your life in unexpected ways, place your trust in Him. His plans cannot be thwarted. He will lead you faithfully – and He will never fail.
