God Notices Your Faithfulness: Small Acts, Eternal Impact

“Cornelius stared at him in fear. ‘What is it, Lord?’ he asked. The angel answered, ‘Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.’”

Acts 10:4-5

Dear Friends,

No small action or kind word goes unnoticed by God – especially those done with a sincere heart. There are times when our hearts overflow with a desire to know and serve Him, yet we struggle to express those longings. We simply do what we can and pray that God sees and understands. The good news is that He does. God notices your faithfulness. Not only does He see, but He often responds in ways far greater than we could imagine.

A Desire to Serve

I remember a time in my childhood when our small city church flooded. The men’s bathroom, located in the lowest part of the basement, collected water, and our church family signed up for shifts to swab the deck until the source of the leak could be located and fixed.

This team effort continued throughout the night, and although I was only elementary-school age, I desperately wanted to help.

My parents agreed to let me take an early morning shift with my grandpa, with the understanding that I would still need to attend school that day. I can still see myself swishing the mop in that damp bathroom, blinking hard to stay awake while praying that God would understand how much I wanted to serve Him. I was only a child and, in my eyes, didn’t have much to offer.

Cornelius: A Man Seeking God

Looking back, I wonder if Cornelius, a Gentile Roman officer stationed in Caesarea, felt something similar.

He was an important man in the eyes of the world, commanding one hundred soldiers, but spiritually speaking he was an outsider. Although he and his family feared God, they were not of Jewish descent, God’s chosen people.

So Cornelius did what he could to honor God. He prayed regularly and generously gave to those in need. Cornelius didn’t know it yet, but God notices your faithfulness, even when it seems ordinary or unseen by others.

And God noticed.

God Responds to a Seeking Heart

He heard Cornelius’ prayers, and at three o’clock one afternoon He gave him a vision. An angel appeared and told Cornelius to send men to Joppa for a man named Peter, who was staying with Simon the tanner by the sea.

Immediately after the angel departed, Cornelius called two servants and a devout soldier who attended him. He explained the vision and sent them to Joppa.

Neither Cornelius nor his servants knew exactly what would happen next, but they obediently took the next step. God had a message for them that would change their lives forever.

When Peter arrived in Caesarea, he shared the Good News of Jesus Christ. Cornelius and many other Gentiles believed and received the gift of the Holy Spirit, astonishing the Jewish believers who had accompanied Peter.

For the first time, many clearly understood that the gospel message was available to all people – Jew and Gentile alike.

Caesarea became the first city known to have a predominantly Gentile church, serving as a launching point for the spread of the gospel throughout the Gentile world.

Small Acts, Eternal Impact

Cornelius feared God and did what he believed was right. His actions did not save him, but God saw his sincere heart and sent him the life-changing message of salvation through Jesus Christ.

That little girl swabbing a flooded church bathroom in the 1970s may have seemed insignificant, but God saw her desire to serve. Just as He noticed Cornelius’ prayers and generosity, He noticed a child trying to honor Him with the little she had to offer.

I, like Cornelius, received the gospel message of salvation through God’s Son and have grown in grace throughout the decades. Only eternity will reveal the impact that comes from doing small things with a heart that longs to serve Him.

The story of Cornelius reminds us that God notices your faithfulness long before you see the results of it.

Have there been moments when you wanted to serve God but felt your contribution was too small to matter?

It’s easy to get caught up in the mindset of the “significant,” when God often notices, and even calls us to, what the world deems “insignificant.” Thanks for a great reminder!
