God’s Word is a Lamp

Dear Kids,

Psalm 119:105. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

During my childhood and teen years, I spent many delightful weeks each summer at a camp in Halstead, PA. All year long I would look forward to returning to this peaceful haven where I enjoyed Christian friends as well as God’s beautiful creation. Camp Iroquoina was located down a long, windy, and dusty road nestled in the Pocono Mountains. My time there shaped my life in more ways than one.

In order to get to the cabins, I needed to climb a steep path that led to a clearing. This was not a problem when there was daylight, and I used to run up and down that hill numerous times during the day. The problems occurred at night. After an evening activity, I would prepare myself for the long hike back to my bed. It was slow going as I picked my way along the winding trail. The tree branches that arched above the footpath hid even the moon and starlight. I would search my memory for the locations of the tree roots that had pushed their way out of the packed dirt. More than once I stumbled or stubbed my toe.

One summer, after a number of nights like this, I went to the camp store and made a purchase that made all the difference – a flashlight. Why hadn’t I thought of this before?

Today’s verse tells us that God’s Word is like a powerful flashlight that illumines the path of life. Its truth shines on every step we take as well as lighting the path ahead. It gives us guidance so that we will know how to respond to any situation or temptation that is along the way. When we are reading, meditating, and obeying it on a daily basis, God’s Word will gleam brightly like a beacon of light that will keep us from falling and hurting others and ourselves.

Don’t stumble through life like I did fumbling up the footpath in the dark. Shine the light!

Love,

Mama
