Where Does God Live? What an Empty Church Taught Me About God’s Presence

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples made by human hands.”

Acts 17:24

Dear Friends,

Where does God live? It’s a question many people would instinctively answer, “In church.”

Last week, as I sat in a century-old church building that our company is selling at auction, God reminded me that His dwelling place is far greater than any building made by human hands.

As I looked around the empty sanctuary, I found myself fighting back tears. The beautiful building that had welcomed worshipers for generations now stood silent. Soon it could become an event center, office space, or something entirely different, and the thought made me unexpectedly sad.

A Church Filled With Memories

This particular congregation was founded on July 10, 1839, and the current church building was completed in 1914. Like many churches built during that era, every detail reflected remarkable craftsmanship and beauty.

I sat in the fourth pew from the front, taking in the magnificent organ pipes rising above the pulpit. In my mind I could almost hear the familiar hymns filling the sanctuary as voices joined together in praise.

To my left stood an ornate wooden lectern where faithful pastors had once proclaimed God’s Word beneath a beautifully painted ceiling. Every detail seemed to tell a story, but my favorite feature was the breathtaking stained-glass windows lining both sides of the sanctuary. The late afternoon sunlight streamed through the colorful glass, filling the room with warmth and reminding me of heaven.

As I sat quietly, I wondered how many people had occupied that very red-cushioned pew over the past century. How many brides had walked down the aisle to meet their grooms at the altar? How many families had gathered to say their final earthly goodbyes, comforted by the hope of eternity? Most of all, I wondered how many people had heard the gospel message for the first time within those walls and placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

An Unexpected Reminder

As I wandered through classrooms and smaller chapel areas, one unexpected moment broke my solemn thoughts.

I came across a small organ tucked away in one of the rooms. Curious, I flipped the switch and pressed a single key. To my horror, I quickly discovered that the organ was connected to a speaker in the church’s bell tower. That one note had just echoed throughout the surrounding Dayton neighborhood.

After my heart settled, I couldn’t help but smile.

Then another thought crossed my mind. I wondered how many people over the years had heard those bells ringing on a Sunday morning and answered the invitation to gather with God’s people for worship.

Sadly, many people today have drifted away, not simply from church attendance, but from pursuing God Himself. We live in a busy world filled with endless distractions, and the decline is seen not only in attendance but also in our priorities, beliefs, and daily lives.

God Does Not Live in Temples Made by Human Hands

Yet as I reflected, today’s Scripture came to mind.

Paul boldly proclaimed that God does not live in temples made by human hands. The Creator of heaven and earth cannot be confined to a building, no matter how beautiful or sacred it may seem.

Where Does God Live?

Through faith in Jesus Christ, God now dwells within His people through the Holy Spirit. His presence is not limited to stained-glass windows, towering steeples, or ornate sanctuaries. Whether believers gather beneath a tree in Africa, inside a small country home, in a school gymnasium, a rented storefront, or a magnificent cathedral, God is present because He lives within those who belong to Him.

That truth replaced my sadness with hope.

The True Church Will Never Be Sold

As we turned off the lights and locked the doors at the end of the open house, I took one last look around the sanctuary.

Soon this beautiful building will belong to someone else. Its purpose may change, but God’s purpose never will.

While I still feel a sense of loss, I don’t have to grieve as though God’s work has ended. This building is a remarkable piece of history, but it is still only a structure made by human hands. The true Church has never been bricks, stained glass, or wooden pews.

Where does God live?

He has chosen to make His home within those who place their faith and trust in the saving work of His Son, Jesus Christ. Buildings may change ownership. Congregations may relocate. Worship styles may change.

But the people of God remain the dwelling place of God.

And that will never change.

Love,

Mama
