The Hand of the Lord Was With Them: What Acts 11 Teaches About Faithful Obedience

“And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord.”

Acts 11:21

Dear Friends,

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to know that the hand of the Lord was with you in everything He asked you to do? That truth would transform every part of life. It would change the way we share our faith, giving us confidence that God is working through our obedience. While every believer has the Holy Spirit living within them, those who wholeheartedly obey God often experience Him working in remarkable ways.

Acts 11 beautifully illustrates this truth.

The Hand of the Lord Was With Them

As the gospel spread throughout the world, God made it clear that forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ was available to everyone who believed – Jew and Gentile alike. When persecution scattered many believers from Jerusalem, they traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch. Some shared the message of Jesus only with people who were like themselves.

Others, however, arrived in Antioch and shared the good news with everyone who would listen. As a result of the obedience of these believers who refused to let prejudice determine whom they would reach, Luke tells us, “the hand of the Lord was with them.”

What an incredible statement!

As these faithful men and women shared the gospel despite difficult circumstances, God blessed their obedience by making their message fruitful. People from many different cultural backgrounds heard the good news, and God opened their hearts. Luke tells us that a great number believed and turned to the Lord.

God empowered these ordinary believers, and through their simple obedience, the gospel spread even farther.

Obedience Opens the Door for God to Work

So often, we think our effectiveness in sharing the gospel depends on saying exactly the right words in exactly the right way. We imagine that if we present the message perfectly, people will believe.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The salvation of souls has never depended upon us. That is God’s work. Our responsibility is simply to obey.

When we understand that salvation is available to everyone who believes and faithfully share the gospel with whomever God places in our path, we can trust that His hand will be with us. With His help, our testimony can make an eternal difference in someone’s life.

God did this in the diverse city of Antioch through faithful believers who shared Christ without prejudice, and He can do the same through us today.

Changed Hearts Produce Changed Lives

Luke doesn’t simply tell us that people believed; he shows us the evidence of transformed lives.

As one act of obedience led to another, God continued multiplying the fruit. The hand of the Lord was with them, and His work became increasingly evident.

Soon the church in Jerusalem, made up primarily of Jewish believers, heard about the growing number of Gentile believers in Antioch. Despite their different backgrounds, they sent Barnabas, a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, to encourage and strengthen the new congregation.

When Barnabas saw the grace of God so powerfully at work in Antioch, he rejoiced. He encouraged the believers to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose.

As God continued working in mighty ways, many more people were added to the Lord until the church in Antioch was flourishing. Barnabas soon realized he needed help, so he traveled to Tarsus to find Saul. After locating him, Barnabas brought Saul back to Antioch, where the two men spent an entire year teaching the growing church.

It was there, in Antioch, that the followers of Jesus were first called Christians.

The Hand of the Lord Changes Everything

The gospel transformed hearts, changed attitudes, and even altered the way believers viewed their possessions.

This became evident when the prophet Agabus foretold a coming famine. The disciples responded by willingly collecting an offering to help the believers in Judea, entrusting Barnabas and Saul to deliver their generous gift.

Think about what had happened.

Jews and Gentiles,  people who had once viewed one another with suspicion and hostility, were now joyfully sacrificing to meet one another’s needs.

All of this happened because the hand of the Lord was with them as they faithfully obeyed Him.

Can the Hand of the Lord Be With Us Today?

I wonder what would happen if today’s church truly believed this reality.

What if we stepped out in faith and shared Christ with everyone God placed in our path, without fear, prejudice, or hesitation? What if we trusted God with the results instead of worrying about whether we had said everything perfectly?

Imagine the lives that could be changed as God worked through ordinary believers who simply trusted and obeyed.

“The hand of the Lord was with them.”

One simple phrase, yet it is filled with tremendous meaning, hope, and power.

Do you long to experience the blessing of knowing that the hand of the Lord is with you as you faithfully obey Him?

Like the believers in Antioch, we don’t need extraordinary abilities. We simply need willing hearts that trust God enough to obey. As we faithfully follow His leading and leave the results in His hands, He delights to work through us in ways we could never accomplish on our own.

This week, ask God to show you one person with whom you can share His love. Then step out in faith and trust Him with the results.

Love,

Mama
