What Are Your Big Rocks?

What Are Your Big Rocks?

Dear Kids,

Matthew 6:33. “But seek first His kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

See more about Thomas “Spanky” Assiter here.

Last week I listened to motivational speaker and auctioneer, Thomas
“Spanky” Assiter
speak about how to grow your business. He spoke about being a “champion” in your avenue of work. “A champion is the best in the world in whatever he does. Society rewards those who are #1 and this is the place that anyone should strive to be.” These are the words that he used to motivate us to affirm, visualize, and believe that we can be the champion within our sphere of influence.

According to the world’s standards, this man has certainly achieved the ultimate when it comes to being a champion in the auctioneering field. He has won numerous awards, worked with a variety of high profile companies, and taken his auction chant onto TV on a very successful classic auto auction. But at what price?
There is always a price to pay when you strive to be a “champion.” When you work harder and longer there are always things that take a back burner. Spanky admitted that in his pursuit of excellence he lost 2 marriages, which in turn cost him a lot of money. He warned us that even in our push for greatness, we should always put “first things first.”
He used the example of a jar. Put the large rocks (or most important priorities) in first. All of the smaller rocks, sand, and water will find ways to fill the cracks. But if you put the small rocks in first, the big rocks will never fit.
God gives this same message in His word. He tells us that our first priority should be His kingdom. Seeking God and putting Him first in our life should be the”big rocks” in our Christian lives. All of the other things will fall into place if we obey this command. We do not need to worry about our life – what we will eat or drink or what we will wear – because our heavenly Father promises to provide all our needs.
Though we should work hard at our business and at all we do, it should not ultimately be for the  sole purpose of being #1. Our desire should always be to point to Jesus Christ as the true “champion” of our lives and, by shining His light, to bring glory to God.
By doing things God’s way you may or may not become well-known or rich by this world’s standards, but you will be storing up treasures that will last forever. The price of putting His kingdom and His righteousness first is well worth the eternal reward.  Thanks, Spanky, for the reminder. Let’s all work hard to develop our own spiritual business plan. What are your big rocks? Put them in the jar first.

Love,

Mama
