Doing Good to All People

Galatians 6:10 “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

Do you ever worry about what people might think? This is a common problem that so many of us experience. We are so afraid of others’ perceptions that we allow our fears to dictate how we act or don’t act.

There may even be times when we desire to do something good for someone, but the niggling doubt strikes us, “What if she interprets my action wrongly?” “What if he misunderstands my motives?” “What if they think I’m crazy?” These thoughts paralyze us and keep us from blessing others. They may even cause us to disobey God’s promptings.

I struggle with these thoughts. But one day while picking my car up from the local auto repair shop, I read a quote attributed to Mother Teresa that was framed and hanging on the wall. Supposedly, this special lady had these words written on the wall of her home for children in Calcutta, India. The quote gave credence to the fact that there may be people who judge our actions wrongly, but that should not keep us from doing what is right and good.

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.  Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.
I love this and think about it when I get that uncomfortable feeling that someone might misunderstand my actions. Whether you are in Calcutta, India, or the United States God has told us that whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of believers. And what He thinks is all that matters!

Love,

Mama
