A Cheerful Heart is Good Medicine

Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

Dear Kids,

How we look at the little frustrations of life can either make us or break us. When an unexpected blip occurs in the day we must choose how to respond. And sometimes the healthiest response is laughter. Those who choose to find humor in otherwise annoying or embarrassing circumstances show a positive and healthier outlook than those who respond in anger or frustration. The book of Proverbs reminds us that a cheerful heart is good medicine.

Having One of Those Days

Last week I was having one of those days! I jumped out of bed earlier than usual, threw on some rumpled clothes draped across the desk chair, and sped to my office to finish a computer update I had started the day before. I needed to get the system in order before the rest of the office staff came in to start their day, and I thought I would have plenty of time to return home, shower and change into a clean outfit. But as computers tend to do, the system took longer than I expected to refresh. So upon looking at my watch I realized I didn’t have time to go home before my first appointment of the day.

So I rushed off so as not to be late. From there on out the day started overtaking me like a steamroller on overdrive. Finally, at the end of the day, I limped back home with hardly enough time to eat dinner before leaving again for my weekly Bible study. Before departing I decided it would be a good idea to freshen up just a little. So I rushed upstairs to apply some of Abigail’s dry shampoo to my limp hair hoping to extend its life for a few more hours.

I liberally sprayed all the roots, but it didn’t seem to be helping. So I sprayed a little more. Finally in frustration I took a closer look at the aerosol can, and to my horror realized I had been applying spray deodorant to my head instead of the dry shampoo I thought I had grabbed.

What a sticky mess!

A Cheerful Heart is Good Medicine

At this point I thought about crying, but instead I ran to regale Abigail with my stupidity, and we both broke into peals of laughter. Long story short: I did the best I could with my hair disaster, went to the Bible study, and laughed some more as I shared my mishap with my friends.

There are two morals to this story. One – ALWAYS check the spray can carefully before applying dry shampoo to your head. And two – when your day gets interrupted by annoying mishaps, choose to find humor in the situation. Because just like the book of Proverbs says, a cheerful heart is a very good medicine!

Love,

Mama

Thanks, Dalia! I hope you got a good laugh. And it did take a couple of days to get the full stickiness out of my hair. LOL!!! Love you!!!
