Knowing God, the Official Historian of Your Soul

“Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight . . .” (NASB)

Exodus 33:13a

Dear Kids,

The Statler Brothers’ song about Shirley Jean Berrell has long been a favorite among fans. The catchy lyrics boast of the singer’s extensive knowledge of his former love, culminating in his title, The Official Historian of Shirley Jean Berrell. He knows everything about her from start to finish with the notable exception of where she is right now. That’s the way love is! We desire to grow in our understanding and knowledge of those whom we adore. Shouldn’t we then desire to grow in our knowledge of God, the Lover of our soul, even more?

Thirty-Three Years of Marriage

It has been almost thirty-three years since Dad and I tied the knot. During that time we have spent countless hours talking and experiencing life together. You would think we could assume the title of each other’s official historian. But the other day I realized there is still more to learn.

Dad was getting ready for work and I had decided to stay buried under the covers for a few more minutes. I asked him if he would grab me a pair of socks out of the drawer, and he said, “Sure, what drawer are they in?” I about fell out of the bed with surprise at this question, “Bart, how can we be married for thirty-three years and you still don’t know where I keep my socks?” I wondered aloud. This seemed crazy to me, but it was a reminder that there is always more to learn.

Moses Wanted to Know God More

Moses had spent decades walking with God. He had been born to a godly family with a mother who taught him to trust. Then he spent forty years in the desert learning to trust on his own. There, God met him at the burning bush and revealed to him His plan to release the Israelites from bondage. In obedience Moses returned to Egypt where he stood up to Pharaoh, backed by the power of God in his words and actions. He relied on heavenly wisdom to lead a mighty nation through the desert and spoke with God face to face on Mount Sinai. But still Moses begged to know more!

And God’s response was thrilling, “Moses, I know you by name, and will cause My goodness to pass before you.” The Lord set him in the cleft of a rock, covered him with His hand. There He gave Moses the privilege of safely seeing a taste of His incredible glory.

God Reveals Himself in His Word

God chooses to reveal Himself to any who seek Him. Today He does this through His word, the Bible. In it He communicates many of His attributes and demonstrates His character. During the Christmas season we celebrate the gift of His Son, Jesus, Whom He sent to walk the earth in the flesh. Jesus, the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of God’s nature, the One Who upholds all things by the word of His power, came as a visual of the invisible God (Hebrews 1:3).

These revelations are so much more than even Moses had the opportunity to experience, and God makes them available for all who seek after Him. His power is limitless. His lovingkindness is inexhaustible. His wisdom is indescribable. And His love is overwhelming. We could spend our whole lives racing after knowledge of the Holy One and still only discover the tip of the iceberg.

God, the Official Historian of Your Soul

In human relationships you can never plumb the depths of knowledge about the other, and certainly with God the human mind could never contain the wide swath of His goodness and amazing love towards us.

But on the other hand, the Lord knows your name and everything about you, even the drawer for your socks and where you are right now. I guess you could say He is The Official Historian of your soul. Don’t you, like Moses, want to know Him as well?

Love,

Mama
