Quiet Time with God: Staying Spiritually Grounded This Summer

Quiet Time with God: Staying Spiritually Grounded This Summer
“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”
Dear Friends,
Summer tends to be a busy time in our household. While the warmer weather and a break from the regular rhythm of fall may make life seem more relaxed, the days still fill up quickly—often with unexpected things. Maybe you have found this to be true as well. That’s why it’s so important, especially during the summer, to be intentional about spending quality, quiet time with God. Time with Him brings countless blessings. These are things you don’t want to miss!
In just the first few weeks of the season, Dad and I have already taken two trips. One weekend, we attended a wedding, and two weeks later, we traveled out of state again for our granddaughter’s very first ballet recital. This week, my sister and her family are visiting, so we’ve spent many sweet hours reminiscing and catching up. All these wonderful events, along with the usual flurry of summer activities, have definitely disrupted my regular quiet time routine.
Why Quiet Time With God Matters
But when I don’t have my normal quiet time with God, I find that I begin to miss it. My personal devotions have become the bedrock of my life because it is during this time that I get my mind focused on the Lord and ask Him to give me wisdom and strength for the day. Things always go better when I start from the right place.
During the years that Jesus walked on this earth, He often left the crowd and went away to solitary places where He would speak to His Father in private. If He prioritized this, then it must be important for us too.
The Myth of Perfect Timing
While I have found that the morning is an optimal time to meet with the Lord, as a mom of five children I know from experience that the early morning hours are not always possible. There was a brief season in my busy mom life when I determined I would get up early each day to spend uninterrupted time with God. Unfortunately, on day one of my plan, all five kids also rose early – so much for quiet, alone time!!
I finally realized that timing is not as important as consistency and flexibility. With the growing needs of my family I adjusted my schedule numerous times over the years, but worked hard to keep it part of my life. So, don’t be discouraged when plans change. Just rearrange your schedule so you don’t miss your time with the most important Person in your life.
Not Sure Where to Start? Try This.
Maybe some of you don’t know exactly what to do during your quiet time with God. Possibly you have tried it, but sit staring at your Bible wondering why it feels dry or difficult. I understand, and I’ve been there too. Over the years, I have discovered a few things that help, and I hope they will encourage you too.
First, remember that quiet time isn’t about a checklist—it’s about relationship. You’re meeting with a real Person. Bible reading and prayer go hand in hand: God speaks to us through His Word, and we respond to Him in prayer. When you begin to see your quiet time as a conversation with your closest Friend—One you see not with physical eyes but with the eyes of faith—it changes everything.
What My Morning Quiet Time Looks Like
Personally, I make myself a pot of hot tea each morning. After all, if the Lord is my best Friend, why not share a cup with Him? Then I settle into my favorite chair to begin our time together. I like to close my eyes and imagine myself entering the throne room of heaven where the Lord is sitting on the Throne of Grace. I breathe deeply to help myself relax and quietly reflect on Who God is and the privilege I have to enter His presence.
When my mind has settled, I have found it helpful to use a prayer guide to start my time. The book, Face to Face, by Kenneth Boa has been a huge blessing to me. It’s filled with Scripture organized by themes such as Adoration, Confession, Renewal, and more. These verses help guide my thoughts and shape my prayers.
After that, I talk to the Lord about my family and any concerns I have for friends or specific troubling situations I am dealing with. I ask Him to show me what steps I should take, if any, and then leave the rest to Him. I have found that this process helps me to release any anxieties I have into the Lord’s hands. As I am reminded about how big God is, my problems shrink and become manageable.
On the days that I have more time, I will jump into a more formal Bible study where I can allow Him to speak to me on a deeper level. God’s word and what it means becomes clearer when we ask for His help in understanding it.
Time Well Spent
I have found that time flies quickly, as I drink my tea and enjoy these special moments with my Savior. I always feel refreshed and ready for the day when it’s time to get started. This is why I miss it so much when life gets busy. It is worth protecting. And the best part is that when it’s time to get on with my day, I don’t have to leave Him behind. His presence goes with me everywhere I go!
I imagine your summer is as full as mine. That’s why I wanted to send this little reminder: let’s encourage one another to keep first things first. Satan loves to distract us from time with the Lord, because he knows that’s where our strength and joy come from. Let’s stay consistent. Let’s stay flexible. Let’s seek God first, even in the busiest seasons. We’ll never regret putting Him first.
