Unexpected Answers to Prayer: How God Intervenes

 “When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.  But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while.”

Acts 5:33-34

Dear Friends,

Sometimes God answers prayer in surprising ways, showing His power through unexpected intervention.. You may find yourself in a difficult situation, wondering how you will ever find a way out – and then God steps in. This shouldn’t surprise us because the God we worship is all-powerful. He is the Creator of the universe, accomplishing His will among the armies of heaven and the inhabitants of earth.

A Modern-Day Example of God’s Intervention

About a year ago, Abigail was traveling internationally and ran into a problem at the airport. She had arrived in a foreign country and was moving through customs, eager to meet a friend who had been waiting for some time with her three young children.

As she approached the customs area, her heart sank. The enormous line of travelers snaking back and forth between the stanchions made it clear – this was going to take a while!

We were talking on the phone at the time, and she shared her frustration. I told her I would pray, and we hung up. Imagine my surprise when she called back shortly after to tell me how God had already answered our prayers!

An airport attendant, observing the long line, approached her and asked a few travelers to form a new queue. Abigail was one of the chosen. Within minutes, she cleared customs and connected with her friend. What an amazing, unexpected answer to prayer!

God Uses Unexpected People to Change Circumstances

Acts 5 tells another story of God’s ability to work through unexpected people. Peter and the apostles boldly confronted the religious leaders. They explained that they could not obey the order to stop preaching in Jesus’ name because a greater authority, God Himself, had instructed them to continue.

The leaders were enraged and demanded their death. But God had a plan. He prompted Gamaliel, a respected Pharisee and teacher of the law, to stand up in their defense.

Unexpected Answers to Prayer

Gamaliel reminded the Sanhedrin of another recent group of dissenters whose leader had been killed, causing the rest of the followers to scatter. God had interrupted their plans, and nothing came of their revolt. Gamaliel advised the leaders to leave the apostles alone. If they were opposing God, their efforts would fail, but if they were truly His messengers, no one could stop them. You simply can’t fight against God!

Luke tells us that Gamaliel’s speech persuaded the angry leaders. Although they flogged the apostles and issued a warning, they let them live. The message of the gospel continued to spread, day after day, from the temple courts to house to house, proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

What This Means for You

Friend, what situation are you facing today? No matter how difficult it seems, God has surprising ways of answering prayer. He is powerful, resourceful, and His plans never fail. Turn to Him in faith, and patiently wait. Your answer may come from a truly unexpected place.
