Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers

Hebrews 12:1. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress.”

I am going to admit it. After having all five of my children I had put on some unwanted weight. I tried and tried to get rid of it on my own, but it was not going very well. After trying many different tactics I gave in and paid the money to join Weight Watchers. I faithfully went to the meetings, paid my money, and kept track of everything I ate. Slowly, but surely, the pounds melted away and I felt free of the extra load I had been carrying.
There were a number of other benefits as well as the smaller clothing size. Many of the aches and pains that I had been experiencing disappeared. I felt stronger because part of the program was regular exercise. And, of course, I just had a much better feeling about myself and was healthier. The benefits of the lost weight were so much greater than the momentary enjoyment of the unhealthy and sweet foods I had regularly indulged in previously.
It is important to keep watch on our spiritual weights as well as physical. Today’s verse tells us that the life of faith is held back by many things, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. When we constantly worry about every little thing, whether big or small, we are not casting those cares on God. That is just a few more pounds for us to carry. When we try to control every situation, instead of committing our ways to God, we are leaning on our own understanding – add a few more notches to the tightening belt. When we give in over and over to the temptations of sin – well, it’s time to buy a whole new wardrobe.
There are many testimonies of people in the Bible who lived lives of faith. Each one had to strip off the weights of unbelief and sin that slowed them down. So, too, we must remove anything that hinders the life of faith and run with endurance the race that God has set before us. The way to do this is by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish.
Though a life of trusting God is not always easy, the benefits of peace and joy are worth the struggle. Just ask Jesus. “He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy He knew would be His afterward. Now He is seated in the place of highest honor beside God’s throne in heaven. Think about all He endured when sinful people did such terrible things to him, so that you don’t become weary and give up.”
I need continually to keep my eye on the goal of eating right and exercising if I want to keep off the unwanted pounds. In the same way we all need to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, constantly throwing off any weights of unbelief or sin that could hinder our life of faith. Make sure that you are a consistent Weight Watcher. It’s worth the effort!

Love,

Mama
