Seven Comforting Words To Grow Your Faith

Genesis 21:1-2 Then God did as He had promised, and Sarah became pregnant and gave Abraham a baby son in his old age, at the time God had said . . .” (Living Bible)

Have you ever had someone fail to keep his promise? I have. A number of years ago someone promised to pay me for work I did, but never came through. I kept waiting and waiting but “no go!” I don’t know if he forgot, didn’t have the money, or didn’t care, but whatever the reason I was left in the lurch. Sometimes this happens with people but never with God.

I was reminded of this truth yesterday while reading Genesis 21. The Living Bible words the Scripture as follows, “Then God did as He had promised . . .” What a comfort these seven words were! The power of this statement becomes real when you read the rest of the story.

God made a promise to Abraham and his wife, Sarah. He told them that they would have a son, and for twenty-five years they waited for God to come through. The sands of time drained through the hourglass, and to the world it seemed there was no hope for this aged couple. They were old and beyond the age of childbearing. Yet this husband and wife continued to believe what God had spoken.

Then [, one day,] God did as He had promised. A 90-year old woman became pregnant and gave birth to a baby boy. What rejoicing and laughter must have filled the tents that day! All their waiting was not in vain. The God who always keeps his promises came through just as He said He would.

This story never ceases to amaze me and strengthen my own faith. If God could do the impossible in order to keep His promise to Abraham and Sarah, then surely He will not let me down. “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through” (Numbers 23:19)?

Are you waiting on a promise from God? Has a lot of time passed while you have waited? Hang in there and “keep believing” because God must come through. And one day you will be able to end your personal story with these seven comforting words, “Then God did as He had promised!”

Love,
Mama
