Trust God With All Your Heart: Knowing the God Who Guides Our Paths
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him and he will make your paths straight.”
Dear Friends,
“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” is a common saying with agricultural roots. It’s wise advice when it comes to finances or investments—diversifying usually protects us from losing everything. But when it comes to spiritual matters, the opposite is true.
A Family Lesson Learned the Hard Way
This familiar saying carries deeper meaning for our family. Ever since I married Dad, I’ve heard the story of how ignoring this advice once led to disaster. In the 1940s, Grandpa Sheridan, an only child, lived on a farm with his parents. They raised livestock and kept a flock of hens. Each day, they gathered eggs and sold them to supplement their income.
One afternoon, Grandpa became distracted as he finished his chores. After collecting the day’s eggs, he carelessly overturned the basket. Every egg broke. As he watched yolks and whites seep into the dusty lane, his heart sank. He knew there would be a reckoning with his parents—and there was! Grandpa learned the hard way that important things require careful handling, and you don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
Why Faith Requires Total Trust
While diversification is wise for eggs and finances, it doesn’t apply to our faith. Solomon, the wisest king who ever lived, understood that when it comes to trusting God, it must be done with all your heart.
Often, even as believers, we say we trust God, yet we spin our wheels trying to figure everything out on our own. If we can’t understand it, we assume it must be wrong. But the Creator of the universe, the One who holds everything together, certainly knows more than we do. The prophet Isaiah reminds us:
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8–9)
This doesn’t mean we stop thinking. God gave us minds to reason and discern. But when it comes to faith, we shouldn’t obey only when we understand—and choose another path when we don’t.
Why You Must Trust God With All Your Heart
Faith in God, and in Jesus His Son, secures our salvation and guides us in wise living each day. When we submit ourselves fully to Him, He promises to make our paths straight. Even when we don’t understand, He is faithful to reveal His will. Through His divine power, He gives us everything we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).
The Danger of a Divided Heart
Throughout Scripture, God warns us against a divided heart:
James 1:8
A double-minded person is unstable in all their ways.Psalm 86:11
Teach me Your way, Lord, that I may rely on Your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name.
So, when it comes to finances—or if you happen to live on a farm with chickens—keep the old adage in mind: don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
One Basket Faith: Choosing Wholehearted Trust
But when it comes to your faith, don’t diversify.
Trust God with all your heart. Submit fully to Him. Don’t lean on your own understanding.
That is the path that pleases God—and leads to a life that truly thrives.
If you’ve been holding onto backup plans instead of fully trusting God, today is a good day to place everything in His hands. Pray for an undivided heart and choose to trust Him—especially in the places you don’t yet understand.
Love,
Mama
