God Answers Prayer: What Peter’s Escape from Prison Teaches Us
“So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.”
Dear Friends,
Some Bible stories first heard in childhood stay with us for a lifetime. The account of Peter’s miraculous escape from prison in Acts 12 is one of those stories. Not only did God demonstrate His power to advance the gospel despite human opposition, but He did so in answer to His people’s prayers, even though they didn’t recognize His answer at first. This remarkable account reminds us that God answers prayer, often in ways we never expect.
The gospel was spreading rapidly throughout Jerusalem. Lives were being transformed, but not everyone rejoiced over what God was doing. King Herod, determined to persecute the growing church, arrested several believers and even had James, the brother of John, executed. When he saw that the Jewish religious leaders approved of his actions, he arrested Peter as well.
The Church Kept Praying
Yet while Peter sat chained in a prison cell under heavy guard, the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
Unbeknownst to the praying believers, God sent an angel to rescue Peter. A brilliant light filled the prison cell as the angel struck Peter on the side to wake him. “Quick, get up!” he said, and Peter’s chains immediately fell from his wrists.
Still groggy, Peter obeyed the angel’s instructions to get dressed and followed him out of the prison. The guards slept on as the iron gate opened by itself, allowing Peter to walk out into the darkness a free man.
At the end of the street, the angel suddenly disappeared, and Peter came to his senses. He realized that the Lord had truly sent an angel to rescue him from Herod’s grasp and from the evil plans of those who opposed the gospel.
God Was Working Behind the Scenes
After collecting his thoughts, Peter made his way to the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark. Even though it was late into the night, believers were gathered there praying earnestly for him. I can almost hear their heartfelt pleas asking God to protect Peter and set him free.
What happened next is one of my favorite parts of the story.
When Peter knocked at the gate, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door. The moment she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overwhelmed with joy that she forgot to open the gate. Instead, she ran back inside to tell everyone that Peter was standing outside.
But no one believed her.
They were convinced she must be mistaken. Peter was in prison. Perhaps he had already been executed and, they reasoned, his angel was standing at the gate instead.
Meanwhile, Peter kept knocking.
Finally, they opened the door and stood speechless as Peter stood before them in the flesh.
After explaining how the Lord had rescued him and giving a few brief instructions, Peter left Mary’s house to stay somewhere out of harm’s way.
Imagine the commotion the next morning. The believers were still marveling at God’s power. The soldiers were bewildered by Peter’s disappearance. Herod was furious and, after a lengthy investigation, ordered the execution of the guards. Yet despite every attempt to stop it, the gospel continued to spread.
What an incredible reminder of God’s sovereignty and power! Nothing and no one could stop His plans then, and nothing can stop them now.
What Peter’s Rescue Teaches Us About Prayer
This story isn’t just about Peter’s miraculous rescue. It’s about the God who hears His people’s prayers and faithfully accomplishes His purposes.
As a child, I loved hearing how God creatively rescued Peter from prison. Today, I still marvel at the story, but now I find myself challenged and encouraged by what it teaches about trusting God.
First, Job declared, “I know that You can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2). God will accomplish His purposes in our world despite human opposition. Nothing can stop Him. That truth gives great comfort in a culture that is increasingly hostile to the gospel.
Second, like the believers in Jerusalem, we have the privilege of participating in what God is doing when we faithfully bring our requests to Him. God answers prayer, often in ways we never expect. Even when we cannot see Him at work, we can trust that He hears every prayer and is already accomplishing His perfect will.
God Answers Prayer
Are you facing a situation that seems impossible? Do you wonder whether God hears your prayers?
Read Acts 12 again. Remember the God who opened prison doors, broke chains, and answered the earnest prayers of His people. The same God answers prayer today, and He is still at work in ways we cannot yet see.
Keep praying. Keep trusting. And stay alert – your answer may be knocking at the door even now.
Love,
Mama
