What is that in Your Hand?

What is that you in your hand?

What is that in Your Hand?

“The LORD said to him, ‘What is that in your hand?’ He said, ‘A staff.’”

Exodus 4:2

Dear Kids,

Sometimes in our humanity we look too closely at ourselves when considering our opportunities to serve God. But this is not the right perspective. When God chooses to use an individual for His purposes and His glory, He doesn’t often look for someone with all sorts of incredible talents. Instead, He searches and empowers those with willing hearts. He then uses the simplest of things to show that the amazing results of ministry are from Him and Him alone. The question to answer is, “What is that in your hand?”

God Works in a Fugitive From Egypt

God had been working on a fugitive from Egypt for many years. Moses hurriedly escaped the country of his birth due to an in impetuous attack on a brutal slave master.. For forty years Moses licked his wounds in the Midian desert, but God met him there and emboldened him to lead the children of Israel out of slavery.

One by one God dealt with the questions and fears of this once Prince of Egypt turned shepherd. But Moses was afraid to go back to the country he had escaped from many years ago. What if the people didn’t believe him? What if they thought he was a liar or a nutty religious zealot turned crazy in the heat of the desert? He had nothing left that would give him any credibility.

God’s Power in Simple Things

But God asked Moses a simple question. “What do you have in your hand?” Moses looked at the worn shepherd’s staff that he had used to guide and protect his sheep. He carried it everywhere he went and even used it as a crutch when he was tired or he needed stability on the rugged terrain. What good would a simple stick do?

But God commanded, “Throw it on the ground.” So Moses did and immediately the staff became a serpent. Moses was so startled by the transformation that he ran away from the slithering and hissing beast. But then God commanded he put out his hand and catch the snake by the tail. Moses again complied and the snake became a staff again.

God assured Moses that this miracle along with others would convince the children of Israel that the Lord, the God of their fathers had truly appeared to him.

Throughout the long ordeal of the Exodus and the Israelites’ wanderings in the desert, God used Moses’ staff again and again to work mighty miracles on behalf of his children. With it God ushered in a number of the ten plagues. He parted the waters of the Red Sea, saving His people and drowning the Egyptian army as Moses extended it over the waters. The staff was the tool used to produce water from a rock and a sign of the powerful presence of God in the battle against the Amalekites. Moses’ simple staff became God’s powerful tool to highlight His power and point people to Himself.

What is that in your hand?

Do you desire to be used by God, but afraid you don’t have the right qualifications? What do you have in your hand? Whether it’s a hammer, a computer, a truck, a cooking spatula, or only an ordinary stick, offer it to the Lord with a humble and willing heart. He can use the simplest of things for His glory in ways you could never imagine.

Love,

Mama
