Survival of the Fittest: When I Am Weak, Then I Am Strong

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Dear Friends,

In 1859, Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, where he introduced the concept of “survival of the fittest.” According to this theory, organisms best adapted to their environments are more likely to survive and pass on advantageous traits.

While I don’t subscribe to the theory of evolution, the idea of “survival of the fittest” holds some truth in our everyday experiences. People with strong immune systems, good genetics, or healthy habits often live longer. The most conditioned athlete, barring injury, usually finishes the race first.

But when it comes to spiritual life, this principle doesn’t apply.

God is clear that humans can do nothing without Him. Truly, every breath we breathe is a gift. All of our intelligence, health, and talents come from the Father’s loving hand, and anything we accomplish is orchestrated by Him and empowered by His grace.

Paul Boasts About His Weakness

The Apostle Paul affirms this truth. If survival of the fittest makes a man successful then Paul is the first to admit he would have failed. While he did have many advantages in life – education, status, lineage – he chose to boast about his weaknesses. God had given Paul many opportunities and successes but they were tempered by a thorn in the flesh.

God afflicted Paul with this “trial” to keep him from exalting himself. Although Paul begged God to remove his weakness, God instead assured Paul that His grace would be sufficient. Despite the thorn in the flesh God would prove faithful, perfecting His power through Paul’s weakness.

This reality led Paul to exclaim that he was well content with weaknesses, insults, distresses, and persecutions because when he was weak then, in God’s power, he was strong.

Bible Examples of Weakness

The Bible is full of examples of unlikely people accomplishing amazing things through God’s power:

  • Moses, a murderer with a speech impediment, led God’s people out of Egypt.
  • A young servant girl boldly told her mistress about a prophet who could heal her master.
  • David, a shepherd boy, defeated a giant with just a sling and a stone.

Centuries later, Paul’s testimony still encourages us today. God is not looking for the fittest people. He is looking for those who admit their weaknesses and turn to Him. His strength is limitless, and He desires to empower us in ways that we could never dream.

Survival of the Fittest is When We are Strong in Christ

Solomon, the wisest king in history, also attests that the race is not to the swift and the battle not to the warriors (Ecclesiastes 9:11). Instead, everything is in the hands of the Lord.  And He is looking for those who trust Him and rely on His strength and power not their own.

So let me ask you:

  • Are you battling illness? God can use your pain to display His glory.
  • Do you feel ordinary or underqualified? God can fill you with wisdom and give you a message to share.
  • Have you made big mistakes? God specializes in redemption—He turns ashes into beauty.

Something shifts in your life when you truly believe this: God’s grace is enough. It’s not the survival of the fittest that matters in God’s kingdom—it’s the surrender of the weakest.

Don’t Just Survive, But Thrive

What do you consider your greatest weakness? Give it over to the Lord today and ask Him to fill you with His strength. Through His power you won’t just survive – you’ll thrive.
