Christian Devotionals and Scripture Applied to Everyday Life

Early in the morning I tiptoed down the stairs to spend some time alone with the Lord. As I entered the kitchen I was met by a spectacular sight. The morning sun was just starting to wake up and through the window I saw her. She was dressed all in pink and had begun to illuminate the dusky sky. With raised arms she spread her joy over the horizon and I took a deep breath at her beauty.

On many summer evenings I end the day with a brisk walk down our country road. This particular evening I started down the road at a fast clip, winding my way along the path created by the tall corn that surrounded me on all sides. There wasn't much to look at as the uniform rows of this staple crop blocked a lot of my vision. All of a sudden I noticed an interesting sight. While most of the corn was the same height, having been planted at the same time, there was one hearty stalk that stuck out from all the rest. It was at least a foot taller than the other average stalks. 

Last weekend Dad and I happened to be home alone. All you kids were gone with friends and so we did something we don't normally do. We watched a PBS documentary on the passenger pigeon. My initial thought was how were the producers going to fill a whole hour with information about pigeons. But as the commentary went on I became more and more interested.

Remember the song "Show Me" from My Fair Lady. Eliza Doolittle and Freddie are taking a walk through the city streets in the middle of the night. Freddie is speaking words of love to Eliza and she gets fed up with his verbose speech. She breaks out into song, "Words, words, words. I'm so sick of words...If you're in love show me!"

This verse came to me one morning as I lay in bed thinking about a wonderful evening we had at Grandma & Grandpa’s house recently listening to missionaries Leon & Lorraine Dillinger tell stories about their experiences in Papua, Indonesia.  

"O God of Heaven, we beseech thee on behalf of our brother, Peter, that you would do a miracle and release him from the prison where he is being carefully guarded . . . ." The fervent prayers of the small house church rose into the night. A number of them had gathered at the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, to pray for the apostle Peter.
