Everybody is a Somebody!
By Sandra Sheridan | | Encouragement
Everybody wants to be somebody. Within the American culture there is a constant push towards this goal. But a big problem with this trend is our definition of significance. We tend to define a person's importance by their position in society, their job preference, the amount of money they possess, their specific talents, and numerous other superficial reasons. Others who do not possess these opportunities are considered insignificant and unnecessary. This is not the biblical way.
Each person who comes to know Jesus as Savior is part of what the Apostle Paul calls the body of Christ. Within this body each individual has a significant part to play and their importance is not based on only certain criteria. Paul himself is an example of this. By today's standards he would be no one of consequence because he was imprisoned, poor, and rejected by most of society. Yet the part he played in the spread of God's message was critical to the growth of the church.
Sing Again!
By Sandra Sheridan | | Comfort, Encouragement, Faith, Heaven, Hope, Prayer, Prayer
We all experience times of difficulty when we cannot share all of the details with our friends or family. There are just some things that no one can understand or that are just too painful to express in words. These crises produce a weight of loneliness that can't be measured. It is in times like these that I am glad for the Psalms. So many of these writings are gut-deep expressions of internal struggles stemming from real life trials that give comfort in our time of need.
Yesterday, Abigail and I were reading Psalm 5. This Psalm of David was a very real appeal to God for help and protection against the wicked. As we read, Abigail and I both wondered what were the circumstances that caused David's deep groaning and cry to his God. Though this shepherd-king had many trials in in his life, we agreed that we were glad all the details were not spelled out in this Psalm. David's more general discussion of his circumstances made it easier to connect our own struggles with the feelings that he expressed.
Once we connected with the heartbreak, we came up with some thoughts for how to deal with our own struggles.
A Goodwill Shelf – A Book’s End
By Sandra Sheridan | | Comfort, Decision-Making, Family Life, Help for the Hurting, Holy Spirit, Salvation, Transforming the Mind
I love books! There is something magical about entering into the mind of people you don't know or who may have already passed away, leaving behind only their thoughts and memories. The right words on the page can bring to life places that you've never been and experiences you have never had. These bound volumes contain messages that can warn, teach, encourage, and entertain. There are millions of books in the world, but there are only a few that can stand the passing of time.
Every once in a while I like to shop at the Goodwill Store. It's fun to peruse the shop, looking for treasures that may have been passed over by other more regular shoppers. While making my rounds the other day I came to the book section. It had been moved to the back wall of the store since my last visit, and the new location gave me a good view of the huge selection of discarded books. As I stood there looking, a sad thought struck me. Each book on the crowded shelves represented one of the many authors who had labored diligently over their writings. All of the hours spent expressing thoughts and stringing words together carefully had met a similar end. Time passes, new books hit the market, and the once talked about bestsellers end up dusty and discarded on a lonely shelf on the back wall of a used merchandise store.
The Bite of a Faithful Friend
By Sandra Sheridan | | Comfort, Faith, Family Life, Help for the Hurting, Hope
People do not always act in accordance with the way they feel. A circumstance can often elicit a response that inaccurately portrays our true feelings. This is one reason it is important to be kind and tenderhearted, always ready to look past a slight and forgive. This lesson hit home to me one dark evening a few years ago.
It was a beautiful summer night. The cool air gave us relief from the heat of the day and drew us into our evening walk. Dad and I set out down the road followed by our old dog, Maggie. She also felt the alleviation from the stifling heat and rose from her place on the back porch to follow us. As Dad and I talked about the day, Maggie occupied herself with the things that dogs do - sniffing the side of the road for the elusive scent of a previous canine traveler, cocking her ear to listen to the night sounds in the woods by the creek, and finally disappearing into the trees to investigate the evening wildlife.
As we turned at the bridge to return home we saw the reflection of lights coming down the road. At the moment the car reached us, Maggie, tired of her search, bounded out of the woods to take her place at our heels. She chose the very moment the car was passing to dart across the road. The squealing of wheels and the heart-wrenching thump told the story in one split second. I screamed and ran to the shadow of black fur that lay on the side of the road.
The Paradox of Education and Spiritual Wisdom
By Sandra Sheridan | | Decision-Making, Encouragement, Faith, Wisdom for Living
We live in an age when many consider education crucial to our success. The addition of more degrees and letters next to our name is considered necessary for one to receive good-paying jobs. But a lot of education doesn't necessarily equal spiritual wisdom.
Two Kingdoms
By Sandra Sheridan | | Comfort, Faith, Family Life, Heaven, Hope
Within the spiritual world there are two kingdoms: the kingdom of light, which is ruled by the God of heaven, and the kingdom of darkness, which is ruled by Satan. For those who understand this truth and recognize the havoc that Satan and his demons are causing in our world, it is tempting to succumb to fear. But this is not necessary for those who are citizens of God's kingdom.
